| Mary Ann and Frederick Steer had both selected land at Yanipy by the time they married in 1882, and they farmed for over 20 years in the area. This is where they raised a family, a daughter Charlotte (Lottie) and son Arthur Frederick. Sadly, their third child Ellis Clifton, died as a baby.5,3 |

| Following several bad seasons, the family had to give up Frederick's farm about 1895, but kept the property owned by Mary Ann. At this time, they took over the Massey Harris agency in Kaniva, selling farm requirements, oils, insurance, etc. Arthur went to Melbourne to study for the ministry at Ormond College, but after a severe illness he was advised to go to a drier climate to live (he suffered from asthma and bronchitis). He went to Cobram in 1905 and decided to select land across the river at Berrigan and take up farming. His parents and Lottie later moved to Cobram as well, and spent the rest of their lives there.3 |
